Anna Marie Champion, DDP has been helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for a long time, starting in 2012 as a paraeducator in schools. Life changes put her passion on hold while her family moved around for her husband’s job, but when they landed back in Forsyth County, she became the Forsyth Coordinator for Creative Enterprises and put her skills and heart to work helping adults with disabilities maximize their potential. With nearly 120 active clients, their goal is to empower those individuals to live as independently as possible and, perhaps more importantly, have a place to belong.
What drives your passion for this specific work?
Anna Marie Champion: My passion comes from my daughter who has pushed through so many boundaries her entire life. She has been told no so many times and always finds a way, and I love seeing her succeed. Every individual here has a story and brings so much joy to this building daily, and I love helping each one reach their potential.
What inspires you every day?
AC: It’s inspiring to witness the resilience in others, just as I’ve seen in my daughter. Each challenge they face is an opportunity for growth, not just for them but for all of us who support them. I believe that by fostering an environment of encouragement and understanding, we can create a community where everyone feels empowered to chase their dreams.
Why is a program like this so important for individuals with disabilities?
AC: Every small victory deserves celebration because it contributes to the larger narrative of perseverance and triumph. When we share our stories, we build connections that strengthen our collective spirit. It’s about more than just individual success; it’s about lifting each other up and creating a ripple effect of positivity.
Where can people find you most out and about in Cumming?
AC: You can find me out on Lake Lanier, mostly. But my family loves eating at Rice. They know us by name there.
