By the time a man sits across from Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA, with a prostate cancer diagnosis, the conversation has often become deeply personal. Not just for him, but for the family and friends who love him. For years, Dr. Miller has worked to start that conversation earlier, when awareness, education and screening can make a difference.
A part of Atlanta’s medical community since 1995, Dr. Miller serves as Medical Director of Wellstar Urology and Director of Wellstar Robotic Surgical Services. As the first urologist to perform laparoscopic and robotic surgery in Georgia, Dr. Miller has one of the largest, most diverse experiences with these procedures in the Southeast. A national leader in robotic surgery, he has performed over 3,500 robotic surgeries.
Still, Dr. Miller was driven to do more to reduce the impact of prostate cancer in his community. That’s why in 2009, he founded ProstAware, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing prostate cancer education out of the exam room and into everyday life.
Through events like the Blue Ties Luncheon and Roswell’s own run4DAD, ProstAware meets men where they are: around lunch tables, on race routes at sporting events and more. In doing so, ProstAware is changing the dialogue about prostate cancer and empowering men and their loved ones to take action.
“Our vision is to have every man we encounter undergo prostate cancer testing and to talk with their doctor about reducing prostate cancer risk,” Dr. Miller says. “We want to remind men that taking care of their health matters not only for them, but for the families who love them. At the heart of it all is a simple message: early detection saves lives.”
Away from the operating room, Dr. Miller is a husband, father of two, avid songwriter and guitarist. Around Roswell-Crabapple, you might find him browsing instruments at Righteous Guitars, catching live music at Ameris Amphitheater, or enjoying a meal with his family at Vas Kouzina. He also loves spending time outdoors, whether that means a walk down Canton Street or another favorite local spot.
